Ashland is a commuter-rail town on the Framingham line, and its housing is unusually mixed for its size — condominiums and townhouses near the station and along Pond Street, postwar capes through the older neighborhoods, and newer single-family construction filling in around Ashland State Park. Buyers here tend to be younger than in neighboring MetroWest towns, and they renovate soon after moving in rather than a decade later.
That buyer profile changes what makes sense. A first renovation is usually budget-conscious and focused, and the shower is where the money shows. For a condominium or townhouse bath, the constraint is almost always space: the room is small, the fixtures are close together, and there is frequently nowhere for a door to swing without hitting a vanity or a toilet. Sliding and bypass systems solve that geometry directly, since they need no clearance at all, and where the layout allows it a single fixed panel with an open walk-in entry does the same job with even less hardware.
For the postwar capes, the room is larger but older. Framing that has settled for sixty or seventy years leaves an alcove that is not the width it was framed at, and walls above it that lean enough to change the opening from base to head. Glass has to be cut to what is there. We take the measurement in your home after the tile is done, working to 1/16", and the panel is fabricated to that reading rather than to a catalog size.
Newer construction around the park gives more room to work with — enough for a walk-in with a fixed return and a door, sometimes a bench. Those wider openings are where the step from 3/8" to 1/2" glass starts to matter, less for strength than for how a long panel holds its plane and how a big door feels at the end of its swing.
Hardware choices here run practical: brushed nickel and matte black cover most of what we install in Ashland, with brushed brass appearing in the fuller renovations. Where a condominium association governs the building, worth telling us early — access and scheduling rules occasionally shape when we can measure and install.
