Acton's housing was built out steadily across four decades, and the town's neighborhoods off Great Road, Main Street, and through South Acton and West Acton hold colonials and capes from the 1960s through the 2000s in roughly equal measure. Tech-corridor families have kept turnover high, and kitchens and baths are almost always the first projects after a purchase.
That produces two distinct kinds of shower work. In the 1960s and 1970s housing, the standard hall and primary baths were framed with 60" tub-shower alcoves, and the common renovation converts one to a walk-in. The alcove width is fixed by studs placed decades ago and is never exactly 60"; a stock panel ordered to the nominal dimension will bind at one end or leave a visible gap at the other. We measure the finished opening in your home to 1/16" after the tile is set and cut to that number.
In the 1990s and 2000s houses, the primary bath typically came with a corner soaking tub next to a small separate shower stall. Removing the tub and expanding the shower into its footprint is the dominant Acton project, and the opening it leaves behind is defined by the old tub deck and existing walls — rarely a standard size, frequently with a return leg or an angled corner. Custom fabrication handles that geometry directly.
Wider openings shift the glass from 3/8" to 1/2", which holds a long fixed run flatter and gives a large door a more solid, damped swing. Where a bench or a curbless entry is part of the design, how the glass meets the floor and the bench edge has to be settled before fabrication rather than improvised at installation.
Steam-ready configurations come up regularly in Acton's fuller primary-suite renovations. A steam enclosure is a genuinely different build — it runs to the ceiling and has to seal — so it is worth raising early rather than late.
Hardware here runs toward brushed nickel and matte black, with brushed brass increasingly common in fuller renovations. Low-iron ultra-clear glass is worth the upgrade where the tile is white marble or pale quartzite, since standard tempered glass carries a green cast at the exposed edges.
