Hull occupies a peninsula barely wider than a road in places, running from Nantasket Beach out to Pemberton Point, and almost every house on it is within a few hundred yards of salt water. That single fact governs more of the specification here than anything about the floor plan.
Corrosion is the first consideration. Hardware finishes that hold up perfectly well twenty miles inland behave differently in Hull, where salt reaches everything and the exposure is constant rather than seasonal. Which hinge and clamp line to use is a decision that should follow from where your house sits and how directly it faces the water — not from the finish you liked in a photograph. We would rather work that out during the measurement visit than have you discover it in year three.
The second consideration is that Hull is steadily converting. Houses built as summer cottages are becoming year-round residences, sometimes gradually and sometimes in a single gut renovation, and the bathrooms reflect that history. Rooms are small. Framing was often informal to begin with and has been altered since. Ceilings drop under low rooflines, and it is common to find nowhere at all for a door to swing.
Heavy glass and a precise fit are what make those rooms work. Where a swing door will not clear the fixtures, a fixed panel with an open entry usually will, and it has the practical advantage of leaving nothing but glass to wipe down. Where the opening is irregular, the panel is cut to the irregularity — we measure in your home to 1/16" after the tile is finished, and notched or angled cuts are routine rather than an exception.
For the oceanfront rebuilds, which Hull has plenty of, the situation inverts: brand-new square framing, room to design properly, and a genuine opportunity to plan the enclosure alongside the tile rather than after it. Those projects often warrant 1/2" glass, both for the span and because heavier glass simply feels appropriate in a house built to face weather.
