Hopkinton has grown faster than almost any town in MetroWest over the past three decades, and its housing reflects that: large subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s off Lumber Street, Wood Street, and South Street, newer construction still going in, and an older core of antique and nineteenth-century houses around Hopkinton Center and along Main Street and Hayden Rowe.
The subdivision housing is where most of the current bath work happens. Houses built in the 1990s and early 2000s were framed with generous primary suites, and those suites usually came with a corner soaking tub and a small, separate shower stall — often a 36" or 42" fiberglass unit with a framed door. Twenty-plus years on, the tub is rarely used and the shower is too small, and the most common Hopkinton renovation removes the tub entirely and expands the shower into the space it occupied.
That expansion is where custom glass becomes necessary rather than optional. The resulting opening is whatever the old tub deck and the existing walls leave behind — almost never a standard size, frequently with a return leg or an angled corner. We measure the finished opening in your home to 1/16" after the tile is complete and fabricate glass to that exact geometry, including corner joints and notches around a bench or a niche.
Wider openings also change the glass specification. A 3/8" panel is fine at alcove scale, but a long fixed run or a large door benefits from 1/2" — it stays flatter across the span and gives the door a heavier, better-damped swing. Low-iron ultra-clear glass comes up on projects using white marble or pale quartzite, where standard glass shows a green cast at the edges against light stone.
Hopkinton's antique houses near the center bring the opposite condition — small, out-of-square bathrooms in old framing, sometimes with sloped ceilings under the eaves. Custom-cut glass handles those directly, following the actual wall rather than a nominal dimension.
Hardware here runs toward matte black and brushed brass in the newer housing, with brushed nickel a steady default. Portions of town on private wells see harder water, so protective glass coatings are worth discussing.
