Sutton runs along Route 146 in the Blackstone Valley, best known for Purgatory Chasm and its orchards, with executive-scale subdivisions built through the 1990s and 2000s occupying much of the rest. Those houses are large, the primary bathrooms are large, and the enclosures the builders put in them are not.
That mismatch is the whole story here. A house with a four-thousand-square-foot footprint frequently has a shower stall three and a half feet across, because the floor plan gave the square footage to a corner soaking tub that has since gone unused. The tub is the single biggest opportunity in the room. Removing it and letting the shower take the platform typically produces something two to three times the original size.
The glass for that cannot be bought off a shelf, because the opening is not a standard shape. There is usually a short return wall where the tub deck died into the tile, sometimes a corner cut at an angle, and sometimes a bench built into the reclaimed space. Those get handled as an assembly of panels cut to the actual angles and joined at the corner, with notches wherever the bench or a niche breaks the run. We take the measurement in the finished room, to 1/16".
For the many Sutton houses where the layout is fine and only the enclosure is tired, the smaller project applies: pull the aluminum surround and the rail beneath it, and put in frameless or semi-frameless glass. The rail is what people are really replacing — it holds water, collects scale, and eventually resists cleaning entirely.
Thickness follows span. Under four feet, 3/8". Over it, 1/2", which keeps a long panel genuinely flat and gives a wide door a heavier action.
Well water deserves attention in Sutton, where most of the town draws its own. Hardness varies road to road, and mineral film on untreated glass appears sooner than anyone expects — it is the complaint we field most often about enclosures that were otherwise flawless. The protective treatment goes on during fabrication and cannot be added later, so it is a decision to make up front.
Against white marble or a light porcelain, low-iron glass drops the green edge tint that standard tempered glass shows.
