Stow is orchard-and-golf country along the Assabet River, with colonials and capes tucked among conservation land, apple orchards, and the golf courses that give the town much of its character. Its housing runs from antique farmhouses along Great Road and Gleasondale Road to subdivision construction from the 1970s through the 2000s, on generous lots throughout.
The subdivision housing is where most current bath work happens. Houses from that period were built with standard tub-shower alcoves in the hall baths and, in the later ones, a corner tub and small separate stall in the primary. Both are now at replacement age, and both convert well. The alcove conversion is the simpler of the two: remove the tub, tile the space, and fit glass cut to the alcove's finished width — a dimension fixed by framing that is essentially never a round number. We measure it in your home to 1/16" after the tile is complete.
The corner-tub-and-stall primary bath is the more rewarding project. Removing the tub and expanding the shower into its footprint produces a genuinely large walk-in, but the resulting opening is whatever the old tub deck and existing walls leave behind — frequently with a return leg or an angled corner. Custom fabrication handles that geometry directly, including corner joints and notches around a bench or niche.
Wider openings change the glass. A 3/8" panel is right at alcove scale; a long fixed run or a large door is noticeably better in 1/2", flatter across the span and more solid in the swing. Low-iron ultra-clear glass is worth considering where the tile is white marble or pale quartzite, since standard tempered glass shows a green cast at the exposed edges.
Stow's antique farmhouses bring the out-of-square condition: walls that lean over the height of an opening, ceilings that slope under the roofline. Glass cut to the real geometry sits tight where nominal glass does not.
Much of Stow is on private wells, and hardness varies. Mineral spotting on untreated glass appears faster than most homeowners expect, and a protective coating slows it meaningfully — worth specifying at order time since there is no retrofit.
Hardware here runs toward brushed nickel and matte black, with brushed brass increasingly common. Our Needham showroom at 33 Highland Ave is about 22 miles from Stow, roughly a 35-minute drive via Route 117 and Route 128 or down Route 62 and Route 2.
