Groveland sits across the Merrimack from Haverhill, a quiet town of capes, colonials, and newer cul-de-sacs spread along Salem Street, Main Street, and Center Street. Renovation here runs on a steady household cycle rather than in waves — a bathroom gets done when it needs doing, and the budget is real but not unlimited.
That makes the choice between semi-frameless and fully frameless glass the most useful thing to understand before you start, because it is where most of the decision sits.
Semi-frameless keeps a slim aluminum channel where the glass meets the walls and, in a door configuration, along one edge. It costs meaningfully less than fully frameless, uses somewhat thinner glass, and — importantly — still eliminates the bottom track that makes an old framed unit so unpleasant to maintain. For a great many Groveland bathrooms it is the sensible answer, and it looks nothing like the four-sided aluminum assembly it replaces.
Fully frameless removes the channel as well. The glass is heavier, typically 3/8" or 1/2", and it is held by hinges and clamps rather than a perimeter. The tile becomes the whole visual field. It costs more, and in a compact bathroom the difference is genuinely noticeable — the room reads larger without any metal outlining the opening.
Both require accurate fabrication, and neither tolerates a nominal dimension. The alcove in your house is not 60" wide; it is whatever the framing and the tile ended up producing, and in an older cape the walls have likely shifted since. We measure in your home after the tile is set, to 1/16", and cut to that.
If the tub is coming out altogether and the alcove is deep enough, consider a fixed panel with no door at all. It is the least expensive frameless configuration, there is no hinge hardware or sweep to clean, and in a family bathroom that gets heavy use it is the easiest thing to live with.
Parts of Groveland are on private wells. Where water is hard, a factory-applied protective coating slows mineral spotting considerably — it has to be ordered with the glass.
