Dover is a low-density town of about 5,900 on the Charles River, with one-acre-plus zoning, extensive conservation land, and a housing mix that runs from antique farmhouses near Dover Center to large custom homes built from the 1980s through today. Bathroom projects here are usually part of a larger renovation rather than a standalone update, which means the shower gets designed from scratch and the glass is specified early.
That early involvement matters more than it sounds. When glass is considered at the design stage, the tile layout, niche placement, bench height, and drain location can all be coordinated with where the panels and hinges will actually land. When it is considered last, the enclosure has to work around decisions already made. We are happy to look at plans before the tile goes in, then return for the final measurement once the shower is complete — measured in your home to 1/16", because the finished opening is rarely identical to the drawing.
Dover's larger primary suites frequently call for wide walk-in enclosures, often with a fixed panel and a door, sometimes with a return leg around a bench. At those spans, 1/2" glass is common rather than exceptional: it holds a long run flatter and gives a large door a solid, damped swing. Where the opening is more conventional, 3/8" is usually the right balance of weight and cost.
The antique houses along Dedham Street, Springdale Avenue, and Centre Street bring the opposite challenge — small bathrooms fitted into old rooms, with walls that are out of plumb and ceilings that slope under the roofline. Custom fabrication is what makes those work. Glass cut to the real opening will sit tight to a wall that leans; glass cut to a nominal size will show a wedge-shaped gap that no amount of caulk hides well.
Because most of Dover is served by private wells, water hardness is a recurring topic, and protective glass coatings come up more often here than in town-water communities. A coating will not eliminate cleaning, but it slows mineral spotting noticeably and makes routine squeegeeing far more effective.
